Kad je Jo Wynne Ritchie iz Colorada slomila stopalo ono je sporo zacjeljivalo. Ona se brinula da će joj trebati umetnuti metalne vijke no umjesto toga doktor joj je propisao malu elektronsku napravu koja emitiranjem elektromagnetskih valova stimuliše rast kosti. Te televizijske, radijske i telefonske antene stvaraju jednu od najvećih koncentracija elektromagnetskih valova na svijetu. To može dovesti do poteškoća u radu drugih visoko tehnoloških uređaja poput onoga koji je ugrađen u gospodina Olhofta. Neki američki naučnici donedavno su odbacivali ideju da elektromagnetski valovi mogu djelovati na ljudske ćelije.

Raniji testovi pokazali su da mikrovalovi mogu dovesti do nešto više temperature ćelija, a to se smatralo bezopasnim. No inženjer elektronike Univerziteta Colorada u Boulder, Frank Barners, vjeruje da, osim zagrijavanja, mikrovalovi djeluju na ćelije na više načina te da kaže kako je došlo vrijeme da se točno utvrdi zašto: "Pokušajmo utvrditi kako da od fizike, preko hemije dođemo do biologije i mogućih posljedica po zdravlje".

Barnes obavlja testove u vlastitom laboratoriju gdje studenti svoju vlastitu krv izlažu radijaciji mobitela. Pod mikroskop, bijele krvne ćelije – koje štite ljudski organizam, ubrzavaju i mijenjaju smjer. Gospodin Barnes kaže da nitko ne zna je li ovakav efekt štetan ili koristan. Ukoliko se pokaže da je štetan ljudi bi se trebali zaštititi od radijacije mobitela, a ako je koristan, onda bi precizno kalibrirani snopovi mikrovalova mogli ojačati naš imunološki sistem. No jednako kako je teško predvidjeti kada će uređaji za stimulisanje rasta kostiju ili mozga biti učinkoviti Barnes kaže da je teško predvidjeti kada će i zašto bijela krvna zrnca reagovati na radijaciju; "Možemo uzeti krv od istog studenta dva dana zaredom, učiniti sve isto i dobiti dva potpuno različita efekta. Očito ne razumijemo biologiju u ovom području. To je činjenica".

Kako bi se ovi efekti bolje razumjeli Frank Barnes, Gary Olhoeft i drugi naučnici sastaju se s građanima zabrinutima za ovu vrstu radijacije. Njihov je cilj razmijeniti ideje i dobiti podršku za istraživanje koje bi pomoglo naučnicima da utvrde kako najbolje koristiti nove tehnologije.
